She was a killer queen, or so the song goes She moved from Paris up to Aberdeen It’s true she was no English rose And a sleazy stinking Travelodge was where she made her bed But in the conference room she smelled of sweet perfume And the dress she wore was Red Walked in a room filled with thoughts of revolution And all the crowd were cheering at the words they thought were best I asked some guy who I was here to talk to And he pointed to a woman in an old red dress She looked at me and I looked back with desire And I could sense that somewhere in her mind There crept a burning yearning fire And I knew she stemmed from royalty, despite the things she said Because her eyes were blue and her blood was too But at least her dress was Red I said “Let’s find a room and talk about the things you do” And she said “Yes, that seems the best way forward for the war” And as she led me through the corridors and business rooms She told me of her policies, her thoughts and deeds and more She said that violence was sometimes the way And that by holding out and keeping strong We might just find a brighter day And she said she wouldn’t stop until the Enemy was dead And I believed her enemy was blue For the dress she wore was Red All through the interview, my eyes relaxed, enjoyed the view And all my ears could hear was the sweet music of a lark She said “It’s time to go, come with me if you want to know Just how I win my battles, win the crowd and leave a mark” And as she stood upon her podium tall, The words she used against her rival were enough to make him fall. Both wanted revolution, or at least that’s what they said, But the crowd were cheering louder for the woman dressed in Red And with her battle won, she wouldn’t stay for anyone, But slipped off down a side-street as if searching for a fight I wondered where she had to go, In my profession I must know, So I followed down that side-street to a world as black as night Her footsteps left a soft destruction in their wake And as her heels clicked on the ground I felt a silence was about to break These old stone walls would crumble ‘til the notables had fled And the cold black night would fade away to a morning warm and Red I turned a corner and she was not trading contraband, But meeting with her rival in a spell of secret bliss He said “What do you gain? Your lust for power causes pain.” But all that was forgotten as they leaned in for a kiss… But she had knowledge of anatomy as well And as she drew her dagger downwards She was able to ignore the smell. In an oozing pool of offal, she abandoned him for dead A stinking, stale cadaver Though the police would never have her For the dress she wore was Red

You say you’ll buy me a diamond ring, but what good would it do? How can an object represent the love twixt me and you? To wear wealth upon your finger just seems a bloody waste And I’m not one to flaunt around a plutocrat’s bad taste Cos I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love No I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love Can’t buy me love, love, love Can’t buy me love, love, love This “age old tradition” Was a systematic mission To rob you of two months pay They made that rule Yet they take us for fools As we throw our salary away They say “Give us your coins Or you just love her with your groin And not with the whole of your heart” But to place such a fee On a token for me Is how bad marriages start. ButI don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love No I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love Can’t buy me love, love, love Can’t buy me love, love, love Everybody wants it Most people need it And if you have it you can use it to make more Buy and sell your wares Check your stocks and shares And lie to people - that’s what advertising’s for! As for employees Best reduce their fees It’s even easier if they live in other countries Exploit the Earth You know what it’s worth Because most of it is already in your pocket. Express your love some other way, and take your ring to hell This need is fabricated and corrupts the mind as well We’re taught to love possessions and eternally want more But if we’re always wanting what can we be happy for? We’re given lives of misery and told that it’s our fault But in this world of greed There is no more need Of a reason to revolt! Cos I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love No I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love Can’t buy me love, love, love Can’t buy me love, love, love Can’t buy me love… Money can’t buy me love

Oh the bailiff’s a-knocking He’s come with his hearse To take what is left of our home The table, the freezer, the bed can all go But I’m saving the old gramophone There’s a lever right here For to wind up the gear It won’t use the electricity And our seventy-eights are all worthless to them Won’t you stay here and dance here with me? Oh the moon and the stars, they glisten And the music plays all through the night My dear, close your eyes and just listen And everything’s gonna be right Oh an image appears on the skyline Of a bird that’s about to take flight My dear there may be no tomorrow So let’s dance all through the night Close your eyes, sail away On a dream, to the day When injustice and poverty end When the Earth is our mother, We treat one another As equals and brothers and friends Where you’ll no longer cry from the hunger or cold And all your potential’s fulfilled Peace bells ring all around Through the cities and towns To say no more Red blood will be spilled And the moon and the stars, they glisten And the music plays all through the night My dear, close your eyes and just listen And everything’s gonna be right Oh an image appears on the skyline Of a bird that’s about to take flight My dear there may be no tomorrow So let’s dance all through the night The long long night will soon be over Sleeping worlds will wake again And sing for all to hear, the people’s rhymes ‘Til then, my dear, forget your sorrow Let today become tomorrow Hear me tell you “This is not my crime” And someday we will rise up together In a world that is peaceful and new With gilded domes and glittering pinnacles With luck it might even come true Still that image appears on the skyline Of a bird that’s about to take flight My dear you will always remember When we danced all through the night

about

"Something must be done about society."
That's what I thought to myself as I woke up after a night of rum and ruminating. But what could I, a humble girl from Brighton, do?
Then I remembered I was a songwriter...
